Splits are calculated by adding percentage-based overhead, such as tax and tip, to the base subtotal amount and then dividing that final total by the total number of shares or participants.
Formula: Total = Subtotal × (1 + Tax% + Tip%)
Example: A $100.00 subtotal with 10% tax and 20% tip split among 4 people.
If a bill doesn't divide perfectly, it is common to round each person's share to the nearest cent. One person may need to pay the extra few cents, or the group can round up the total to the nearest dollar to ensure the full amount is covered.
While even splits are simple, you can handle large disparities by calculating weighted ratios. Determine each person's individual subtotal and apply the same tax and tip percentages to their specific portion to keep the contribution fair.
Traditional etiquette suggests tipping based on the pre-tax subtotal. However, modern dining often utilizes the post-tax total for convenience. As long as the group is consistent with the chosen method, both approaches are widely accepted.
