Net Work Hours:
Calculating your actual working hours involves determining the total time elapsed between your clock-in and clock-out times, then subtracting any unpaid break periods. This ensures you are compensated accurately for the time spent on the job.
Total Hours = (End Time - Start Time) - Break Duration
Scenario: An employee clocks in at 8:00 AM and clocks out at 5:00 PM, taking a standard 60-minute unpaid lunch break during the day.
For overnight shifts, add 24 hours to the end time before performing the subtraction. This accounts for the date change and provides the correct total duration.
Many companies use the "7-minute rule," where times are rounded to the nearest quarter-hour for payroll. Always check your specific company policy regarding time clock rounding.
While requirements vary by region, many labor laws mandate a 30-minute unpaid meal break for shifts over 5 or 6 hours, plus additional paid 10-15 minute rest breaks.
